PholkTales: What is Phish?
This is a story of my first experience with seeing Phish live. It was Dayton '97, and I was having the roughest and darkest time of my life. I had been kicked out of high school for giving a girl a joint on a senior trip to Chicago, and I was in rehab for it. I had already purchased tickets to the Cleveland, Auburn Hills, Dayton run and was now facing the possibility of not being able to go.

My parents knew how much this band and their music meant to me, and, against the wishes of the rehab, my mother drove me to the show and went inside for the first set with me.  All I wanted to hear that night was AC/DC bag and boom! They opened up with it and jammed it into Psycho Killer... needless to say, that memory is still with me and very strong.

The rest of the show was excellent, and as I listened to this music that I loved so much, I realized the power contained in it... I realized its ability to lift the souls of the people who listen to it and inspire them to do the same, whether through music, art, or just in the way we practice and live our life... it's a beautiful and rare thing. This experience solidified my love for this band forever, and I have seen them at any opportunity I have had.

My point is that Phish is able to bring happiness in to their audiences' lives, and that is a very powerful thing for any artist to do...  They should be very proud of it. So thank you to the band, the crew, my phamily ( both nomadic and not). And realize that your life traveling with our phamily on the road need not conflict with the phamily at home.

P.S. thanx mom for the greatest gift ever, and to the people who got shut out and kicked it with her during the second set!
