PholkTales: Run-ins With the Law
Back in 1999, I was thrilled that Phish was going to be here in Boise. It was the only show I could go to on the tour and it was in my backyard! Sweet!

I took along four friends, two of whom love Phish and two of whom had no idea what was going on. We found a nice spot to chill in the lot and the cop scene was non-existent. So, we all bought some beer and had a wonderful time.

After a while, I decided to check out the rest of the lot. As I was walking, I found a guy who was selling some glass. I was impressed, since possession or selling of glass is illegal in Idaho.

As I was admiring the handiwork, I looked to my left and saw this guy just playing with a dime bag. I thought nothing of it until I saw one of the only two cops in the lot walking up to him. When he was about 10 feet from the Phan, the kid noticed and quickly put the bag in his pocket. This is the exact conversation that went down not five feet from me.

Phan: Hi there.

Cop: You know, son, if I see that stuff, I'm supposed to take it.

Phan: I know. That's why it's in my pocket.

Cop: Okay, then. Have a good day.

I was stunned! Cops have a reputation here in Boise for being complete jerks, but this one was pretty cool. My buds and I laughed about it all the way into the show. Oh, yeah, those two guys who were non-Phans before the show "saw the light" and love the band now. Who wouldn't after seeing 9/14/99?
