PholkTales: Run-ins With the Law
Date: A few years back

Place: Madison Square Garden

Ten kids from Suffolk County are heading to Manhattan to catch Phish at MSG. We puffed before we got on the train, while we were on the train, and right on the street outside MSG. There were HUNDREDS of heads chillin' outside the Garden, from all walks of life - probably mostly from the East Coast. I met some folks from New Hampshire.

As usual, like any other show we have the vendors - both licensed and illegal. Lots of people were selling all kinds of beautiful hand blown pipes, etc. Bubblers, bat-hits, chillums. This is around the time when glass bowls were getting really popular and it seemed everyone was eager to show theirs' off.

This one guy, in his late 30's, opens up a black case and inside he has some really nice stuff. He was kinda nervous and a dick, but in NYC he had good reason cause the men in blue there don't mess around. My buddy "Joe" buys a nice little glass piece for about 25 bucks. No more than five minutes later two men in plain clothes confront Joe and check his pipe for resin or any incriminating things.

Somehow, he must have ditched his "Nuggets" because these two cops were on him like a cheap tie. They weren't rough with him but used intimidation/fear for sure. (Doesn't EVERY cop like to do this? It's the case in my experience.) They eventually left us all alone and we saw a great concert that night. We had about ten people all together and ALL of us had nugs and mad pipes. About five of us bought new glass pieces that night.

I remember my buddy "Rick" bought a "hammer" pipe with some crazy designs around the head piece. He eventually broke that pipe, and took it to a glass blower to have it fixed! I think they even shared a bowl of the diggity dank just to call it even - no cash necessary! These are some moments which I will never forget. Peace.
