PholkTales: Run-Ins With the Law
My story begins after the last night of the deer creek run in 98. We had just had an incredible couple of days traveling and seeing a few really sick shows....Ramble On opener in Alpine, kill me now. Knowing we had to head home after deer creek, we stocked up on a bunch of lot goodies, not to mention how spun we were from the show.

I had invited a few friends to come along on my trip who were new to the Phish scene. My friend had to be home that night in order to make work the next day, so we headed out of the lot towards town. As we were in line moving down the road, my buddy lights up a really stinky nug. Before I knew what was happening, I looked to my right and saw about 50 State Trooper vehicles....it was a sobriety check point!

I yelled to put it out, roll down the windows and light a few smokes. My heart was pounding, knowing what exactly we had packed in our vehicles could land us in County for a while. We entered the check point and I was asked to get out of the vehicle. I thought for sure he smelled something. He got in my face and asked me a few questions about how many drinks I had. I was honest and said I had been drinking since about 9am, but stopped about 4pm.

He stuck his head through my window and asked everyone if there was anything in the car he should know about. "Of course not officer," was all he got. Took a quick look at my DL and told me to have a nice drive back to Michigan. So close,,, but not today officer. We laughed our asses off for the next half hour out of sheer fear. He could have really been a Charles Bronson of the force if he only would have looked down at my driver seat when he stuck his head in the vehicle.....stems and seeds everywhere. O' well, what a hell of a good time.
