PholkTales: Run-Ins With the Law

It had to have been the last night at Deer Creek in 97 or 98. It was my first year at Deer Creek, so I was not all that familiar with the area. I remember finding some of my friends after a fantastic show.

We were all talking about favorite parts. Since we were still getting a good buzz, we started to go back to the camp. We took a wrong turn at the wrong cornfield and ended up lost... we walked forever. My friends had decided to turn back and find the right way.

My girl and I decided to keep going, and we were both pretty trashed. We finally caught a ride at a gas station, but the driver accidentally took us the wrong way. Now we are in the middle of nowhere and about 30 miles from our camp site.

So we start walking back, and the next thing I see is a cop role up behind us. I start getting paranoid, thinking I'm going to jail in the middle of Indiana. I do a mental pocket check real quick and realize that I'm all good, as my girl is flagging this cop down. He realizes that we are a long way off as we explain the events of the night.

The cop is nice enough to give us a ride back to the gas station. As the cop is talking on the way, he says he saw PHISH when he was in college.  He was a nice guy (about my age), and he seemed pretty cool. We thanked him for the ride and started walking back in the original direction.

We get a little ways down the road and a trucker pulls up and offers us a ride. This guy was very strange... he looked like he had been wired and driving for a couple of days straight. We decide to get in because we're completely tired of walking all over IN.

He is a pretty nice guy as well, just needed to get some good sleep. The man eventually takes us right back to Deercreek, right back to our camp site at PHISH FARMS. We tell him thank you and offer him a couple of beers for whenever he pulls over, but he declines and tells us thank you.

We find our friends who have been back for three hours... they had thought we were arrested. We then tell them the events that I just told you. You might remember the T-shirts from that summer tour... they had a picture of a bunch of cornfields on the back and super corn lost in all of them. I am glad that I got that shirt because I never could have felt more like supper corn lost in the middle of a cornfield as I did that night.

I hope you all enjoyed that story, and don't think of me as too much a dumb-ass. Who knows, maybe we'll run into each other at a show some time. I will be the one with a silly shit-eating grin on my face and stars in my eyes.

PEACE,LOVE,and HAPPINESS
