PholkTales: Random Acts of Kindness
The summer of 1998 was probably the single best summer of my life. I was at the end of High School, still had no responsibilities, and was able to raise just enough money for the first three shows of the summer tour in Portland, Oregon, and George, Washington.

If any of you have done a tour before, you know that cash wise, it's not easy to get your tickets ahead of time. You just have to get out in the lot and make some cash (Selling shirts, not drugs!) and hope you can find your ticket to the next show.

I made it all the way to New York without missing a show, and also without ever stumbling upon extra's for the Lemonwheel festival at the end of tour.

For weeks before I had tried and tried to get tickets to the Lemonwheel and to be honest, I was losing hope. Looking for tickets for almost a month and not finding them leaves very little room for hope.

Mike and Ben (who I picked up at Deer Creek) had tickets for the wheel and could only do the end of the tour. So here I am with two kids who have tickets to the Wheel, rocking out at Vernon Downs, and I'm getting real pissed about doing a whole tour and missing the grand finale as some would call it.

After what I thought was an excellent show, I decided that I cannot fail in my quest for tickets. I had $500 dollars left and about 10 different shirts, and I was ready to give them all up for one ticket to the Wheel.

A day stop over to see friends in Burlington and up to Limestone. It is now August 15th at noon and I'm stuck in a traffic jam full of Phisheads, without a ticket, finger out the window of my car just waiting. People pass by on all sides and shake their heads as if to say "I've seen you all tour, and I really wish I could help you out, but I just can't."

And then an envelope lands in my hand.

A peace sign and less than 2 seconds later, the VW Jetta that had just passed and made the handoff was up the road far enough that I could never catch it in traffic.

Upon opening the envelope I found my tickets for the weekend with a note that basically read (not verbatim): "Do unto others as you would have them do to you."

Although this may sound cheesy, it's exactly how it really happened. I never found those kids again, and I don't think they really wanted me to. It was an act of complete selflessness that I will never forget. I try my best to pull out a miracle for people from time to time now, especially at Cypress, we gave away 4 sets of tickets for free, but it all stems back to the Golden Rule.

God bless you good kids out there who have treated me right on my 2 tours. See you all soon this summer when the Phamily finally reunites!
