PholkTales: Random Acts of Kindness
It was October of 1995 and I was preparing to go and see my first show at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo Mich. Unfortunately, I had torn up my ankle playing basketball a month earlier and was in a cast up to my knee and walking with crutches. My friends and I made the uncomfortable (at least for me) drive into Kalamazoo from Toronto.

We finally got to the venue, a 7,500 seat general admission hockey arena, a few hours before the show. I really didn't even think about how I was going find a seat with my cast and crutches until we saw the line up to get in about 20 minutes before the doors opened.

I realized that I was inevitably going to trip and get trampled. Now being my first show, I was a little disappointed because I wanted to get as close to the stage as possible. So, my friend and I walked past the line, and up to the front door of the venue. My friend started banging on the door until one of the security guards opened it and asked what his problem was.

He explained my dilemma at which time the guard told us to stay right there and he'd be right back. It's now five minutes before the doors are supposed to open and the guard has not returned. We assumed that he had forgotten or just did not want to be bothered with us.

We were about to walk away when he comes back to the door, points at me, and says "you and one friend, come here." So I grab my friend, we walk inside, and the guard tells us to have a great time. Of course I thank him as we walk/limp our way into the totally empty arena. I mean we were the only ones in there!

Unable to believe what had just happened, we walked to front row center, sat down and pulled out a little celebratory joint. It was not until five minutes later that we heard the crowd and saw them rushing down the stairs and towards us.

Throughout the show, the security guard at the front of the stage held my crutches as I leaned up against the rail. He even kept on bringing water to me throughout the show. All I can say is that the Phish gods must have been with me that day!
