PholkTales: Random Acts of Kindness
The only category this would fit under is "Random Acts of Kindness and Love," but I think that's an overstatement. It was summer tour 2000 at Deer Creek, first night. I had scored tickets to the other two nights, but I couldn't afford the first night, especially from a scalper. I had seen the Phish from Vermont enough that I thought one more show wouldn't be a big deal (and of course they played Fee!).

So my friend Jenny and I stopped by Osco to pick up posterboard and markers to make funny signs before the show. We've all seen the "my soul for your ticket" and stuff like that. So I made one that said "Hi-Fives for Free!" with a few stupid pictures on it. As a joke, I walked around with this sign in one hand and my other hand up like I was going to give a hi-five. The first guy I saw in the lot gave me a hi-five and laughed. So I was pretty proud of my sign, because I thought it was pretty damn funny.

Then we made it down to Shakedown, and we were walking around looking at stuff, and I still had my sign up. People would see me from 30 feet away, come running and give me a flying hi-five. It was great. People would be drudging through the masses of people, obviously hot and uncomfortable, and see my sign and get a huge smile on their face... they would give me the best hi-five anyone has ever given anyone. So many people hit my hand - Jenny and I estimated over 300 in the hour and a half before everyone went in. My hand was bright red (and hurt a lot).

I was left outside, but I ran into a phan I knew and we went around back.  We could hear the show perfectly anyway. I was thinking about the guys standing on coolers making me jump to give them a hi-five, and seeing those huge smiles on peoples faces, and it is definitely the best show I have ever not seen.
