PholkTales: Odd Phans
Here's an experience I thought the pholks would enjoy, and I'm sure anyone who was within 50 feet of us will remember...

So it's the first show at the Tweeter Center, fall tour, '00 (someone had, of course, doctored the small sign as you drive in, replacing the 't' in Tweeter with a small cardboard 'z'...there's just something about seeing phish at the Tweezer Center) ...but I digress.

So it's the second set of the show, and I'm starting to really warm up to their choices after being somewhat disappointed in the first set...when they bust out one of my favorite tunes, What's The Use... for my money, nothing is more welcome after a raging jam than the slow, melancholy dirge that is this song...

So we're on the 'lawn' (Tweeter replaced their lawn with sand...so it's more of a beach than a lawn, really), and they go into What's The Use, and those who dig the song let the band know it, and apparently, someone else nearby also approved of the tune, for as they hit the first lick and started to go into the song, this dude somewhere behind us yells "Yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!!!"

So no big deal right, everyone yells at the beginning of a new song... but what we didn't know was that this guy had ingested a little too much of... whatever he had ingested.

Now we're not sure, my friends and I, but after much debate and conjecture we decided that the most likely reason for what came next was mainly due to the monstrous difference between Piper... and What's The Use. Now imagine the difference, the world of difference there... Piper, the insane frenetic jam... What's The Use, the plodding funeral dirge...

Now imagine that difference when you're out of your face on acid. When Piper ends, that monster frenetic jam world dissolves, and What's The Use, the depressing trippy ballad comes up...

Might spin ya, right?

Well it spun this guy...right into a loop, right about the time he yelled "Yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh" when they went into What's The Use.

For the next 10 minutes of the song, this guy did nothing but scream, at the top of his lungs, "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah!!!!"

It started out he'd take a nice 30 second break between screaming, but then as the song went on, the breaks between screaming became less and less, until he was stopping for only a few seconds.

Now, during any other song this might have been overlooked...even acceptable...but What's The Use? I was trying very hard to keep my sense of humor and not really pay attention to the fact that this dude was ruining the song.

His friends must have realized what he was doing and some of the looks he was getting, so they started to try to calm him down...

...all that did was get him moving.

So now you have a guy, screaming "Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh" at the top of his lungs every few seconds, walking quickly away from his friends. Did I mention every once in a while in between screaming this guy would hold his hands up in the air and wiggle his fingers going, "deedooddledeedledoodldoodle"?

Well there was that too.

So anyway, the guy finally walks far enough away that we can no longer hear his screaming, and his friends seemed to follow after him. We looked at each other, my friends and I, and knew we had one more story to tell. Little did we know that was not the last time we'd see this guy.

So after the show, we're in the cattle-like line of phans trying to get back to the lots, when a very familiar cry comes to us out of the crowd in front of us. "Yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!"

Our guy! The Yeah Guy! We see him bobbing towards us out of the crowd, and at some point he's lost his shirt, and at some other point he's gained two new friends! Two large friends in nice blue uniforms. The cops had this guy between them, hands handcuffed behind his back, eyes like a wild man, and damn if he didn't look really happy.

Why wouldn't he be happy?

What's The Use had *just* come on.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
