PholkTales: Odd Phans
Three friends and I rented a car and drove from Chicago to New York for the 98 new year's run. We stayed in a hotel in New Jersey with two other friends and a dog named Monty. The first two nights we spent some time in a bar across the street from MSG. We saw some local crew guys that were working at the show, and just jokingly were wondering if they could get us in for free. We did not talk to them the first two nights, but would for the next two.

We got back to the hotel after the second night and a friend from home who was not planning on going to the shows showed up. Wink, as we all call him, decided to come along with a few friends that came for the last two nights of the run. Well now we had a friend but no ticket for the friend. So, we went to the bar again for the third night, and the same local crew guys were there. This time we had a reason to talk to them.

We started shooting the shit and buying them rounds and Wink finally asked them if they could get him in. I am not real sure that they liked this, but they did not say no. They kind of just beated around the bush and were sort of fucking with us. It was getting close to showtime and we all left the bar except Wink and our friend Fig.

It turns out that this local crew guy asked them if phish was the only kind of music that we listened to. My friends Wink and Fig had just been to a Slayer concert because they were given tickets. They started talking to this guy about Slayer and he ended up getting my friend Wink into the show for the 30th and 31st. Not all New Yorkers are assholes, just most of them.
