PholkTales: Near Catastrophes

It was going to be a great night. Phish was in my hometown of Greenville, s.c., in the fall of '98. We were pumped cause it was the first time they were playing here.  We had been chillin across the street from the venue at my girlfriend's house and divided some shrooms up among some friends. So on we go to the show.

We had floor tickets and stationed ourselves in the front and held our ground. My best friend Kevin had eaten way more shit than i did, but we were all starting to feel the effects before the show started. The boys came on and started a fun first set. As the final song of the set, the David Bowie is one i will never forget.

The first notes were ringing out... we were groovin hard, and i notice Kevin is lookin a little overwhelmed. Minutes later, he was lookin over fucking whelmed, and he passed out right in the middle of the packed floor, right in the front.  OH SHIT! I, being very fucked up myself, had to act fast. I picked up my very heavy friend and dragged him toward the side, through hundreds of blissful phans who had no clue of my plight.

I finally got him over to the side rail, but needed help to get him over it. He is still passed out, and I grab a couple of guys to help me lift him over to the now alert and ready EMS guy.  At this point, all I can tell you is I'm tripping out.  Anyway, we have him up and half over the rail, and there's a cop there, too.

All of the sudden, Kevin jumps up out of his stupor, cocks his head listening and yells, "There still playing David Bowie!" Needless to say, I shit something. The EMS guy said something about heat and left, and I almost took my turn to pass out. I still don't know what to say to this day, but my friend came back to the show and I was just glad.
