PholkTales: Miscellaneous
After reading one of the stories in the "Encounters with the Band" section, I was reminded of a similar incident where I felt the band was playing a song for me, or mostly for my friend. In the story I read (Phishin at the Ritz), the author's brother met the band before the show and told them to "Rock and Roll." That night, while they were tripping (which probably made the whole experience much better), Phish broke out with that exact cover. They believed that it was because of what they told the band before the show, and it very well could have been.

Well at PNC Bank Arts Center on June 29th 2000, my friend (Timmy Tuff Nuts) desperately wanted to hear Cities. So before the show, knowing we had 10th row seats, he wrote "Cities" on a a big ass beach ball. He broke it out during the second set, blew it up, and tossed it on stage.

It was a perfect throw, landing right next to Trey with the word "Cities" clearly visible to Trey and the crowd. My friend's wish came true as they broke out with it the next song! Whether they played it because he threw the ball up there or if they had planned to play it before the ball was thrown, I do not know, but my friend and I like to believe that they played it for us.

I've heard of Phish doing these types of things before, and I think it's really great. It really made the show special for both me and my friend. Thanks Phish.
