PholkTales: Miscellaneous
In 1998, I was never happier to work at Pappa John's pizza. The reason was that the company had a skybox at the Crown where Phish was to be playing and my boss is one of my good friends.  Basically, we had a phat living room with leather sofas, a sweet balcony overlooking the stage, a private bathroom, and a wet bar as our accommodations for the night.

Well, a couple of my friends and I (including my lady friend at the time) celebrated these rock star accommodations by rolling balls and basically misbehaving as far as the Crown security was concerned (smoking Dank, blowing lines of molly, etc.)

We also danced with reckless abandon in the adjacent skyboxes, which was frowned upon, and kept locking the door to the skybox for obvious reasons. Still, I got to slow dance with my girl barefoot on thick carpet as Phish did the Beetles "Something." It was truly a night for the books.

We were happy enough to get the box again for the 2nd night of the 1999 shows. This time, there were about 5 or 6 of Cincinnati's finest perched in the box next to ours to our dismay. This didn't really bother us though, seeing as how we had ingested our primary intoxicants beforehand. Also, we had snuck 100 glowrings into that box. At set break, we started activating them and the whole room was totally lit up. At this point, the skybox attendant lady came in and checked on us. She thought the glowrings were very pretty.

My rolling-ass brother felt compelled to tell her how they were going to look a lot prettier when we threw them all into the crowd for the first phat jam of the second set. He didn't know any better. "We don't want to hurt anyone, that's why we got rings instead of sticks." I tried to be diplomatic. She understood our plan and was sympathetic, "As soon as I see anything fly out of this box, I'm going to have to call security. So make sure you don't have any of those things in here (still) or else they'll take them away." Fair enough.

During the Black-Eyed Katy segment of Moma Dance, we let 'em loose. They showered down on the crowd and everyone went nuts. It would have looked better if it would have been 1000 rings, but it was really cool. It also seemed like they extended the intro a little bit until the rings settled down and they changed the opening line from "All throughout I gaze and glimpse you..." to "All at once, I gaze and glimpse you.."

I don't know if this had anything to do with our shenanigans, but true enough, the moment ends. The rings settled down and the song continued. We had pulled it off and at that moment we felt like we truly contributed to the glorious spectacle that is a Phish concert.
