PholkTales: Miscellaneous
December of 1999 just seemed like the time in my life when Phish was all I could think about. I had just come back from seeing 5 shows from their Northeast winter run (adding to my personal list of 50+) and had tickets for what was most definitely, without a doubt going to be the greatest Phish show of all time... My friends and I were about to witness the best performance exhibited by these truly phenomenal musicians in the everglades of Fla? Hey, whatever works... I would have slept with the Lizards and snakes in the fuckin' jungle if necessary to have seen Phish on this particular Newyears.

Fast forward to about oh, lets say 4:30 in the morning, first day of 2000. I am entranced by the band that I am so used to watching. I have grown up listening and watching Phish, totally amazed by Trey, in love with Trey.  There are very few men besides my father, my brother, and my best friend for whom my inner affections equal this magnitude of love.

I love watching Trey play his guitar, and I had been front row directly in front of Trey since the clock struck 12. I had just experienced, from about 10 feet away, an earth shattering Bowie, and I was still trying to get over the heartfelt Reba that brought tears to my eyes. The crowd did get a break after my Soul. Trey left the stage, and Page and Mike were just chillin and talkin to each other. This extended down time was a good 10-15 minutes, but it didn't matter cause I needed to pause for a drink and sit down for a few.

For people who have been on the rail, you know the metal back is so key to lean against. I was still hyped, and after a short rest I jumped back up and waited for the band to start up. It was nearing 4:45 and Page was playing some nice rolls on the piano, Mike playing around on his bass. Still no sign of Trey, his Languedoc on a guitar stand next to his amp.

Then out of the corner of my eye I spot Trey running, literally sprinting out from the blocks of backstage with a huge grin on his face. while never missing a stride he turns the corner, picks up his guitar and leads the band into one of my favorite Who songs - Drowned. I was so pumped to hear this song cause it was like third time I had heard Phish play it live, and because Trey was obviously loving the moment. He was so amped to be ripping out Townshend licks, jumping around on stage, right in front of me. Throwin out a couple windmills even!!

I lost my shit, in a controlled way. I was definitely enhanced, but I wasn't so messed up on drugs that I let it overpower me (like it did to plenty of phans that night)... I was in a state of total bliss. Watching my favorite band play at 5 in the morning on New years day, my home almost 1000 miles away. I had made it, I saw the greatest Phish show in phishtory, quite possibly the greatest concert in Rock history, and I had the time of my life in the everglades of Fla.
