PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
December 8, 2002. I had just gotten my mail order notice and found out that I was going to be attending the Cincy shows on the 2003 February Tour. Earlier that week, my friend gave me his ticket to Mountain Stage (in Charleston, WV) since he was moving to Columbus, OH. We loaded up the van that afternoon and headed east on I-64 to Charleston.

When we arrived, we saw more Phishheads and followed them to the auditorium. After sitting through a few acts, including Derek Trucks, Mike and Leo came out and played a 1/2 hour long set. After the show was over and people were leaving their seats, my friends and I notice nobody was guarding the door to get backstage. My friend Kuehne turns to me and says, "Go on Goose".

Hesitating, I lead my group of 6 friends through the door and there he is. 3 girls were getting Mike's autograph when I wandered up to him. I happened to have my Billy Breathes cover just in case I met him. While he was signing my cover, I gave the bass a quick touch.

He was signing autographs for all my friends and kinda got lost in what he was signing for who. He ended up with a piece of paper he had signed and nobody was claiming it. He got a huge smile on his face and jokingly said, "$10.00" while waving the autograph. He gave it to my friend and finished signing autographs.

We exited the venue and told everybody we saw the news. We heard everything from "Fucking A" to "You're full of shit". It might have been one of the coolest days of my life.
