PholkTales: Encounters With the Band

The month was January and the year was 1994. It had to be no more then just a few weeks after Phish had played the classic Holiday Run (with the Phish tank stage) in 1993. That Previous December I had just turned 15 (I was young but saw about 8 dead shows already so I was used to the scene) But after seeing my first Phish show at NEW HAVEN, CT coliseum on 12/29/93 I was hooked. I had been a fan for bout a year prior but didn't have the chance to catch them ever until that night.

To cut to the story, one day I was in a library near my high school and my friend and I were working on a report. Needless to say I got a little bored and started going through phonebooks of different states. Being the phishfreak I was back then I picked up the Vermont phonebook and went through looking for any of the band members.

I skimmed through and found a "jon fishman", I wrote the number down then a few days later my friend and I call this number (3 way) and there is no answer. Just a answering machine that listed about 5 people that lived in the house. So we tried back later and some guy picks up and we say "is jon there", he says "jon speaking!". I'm like, "Jon Fishman?". He's like "Um Yah you called my house you got me". It was rather amusing , we went on to explain how we got his number. "you got my number in a f'in new jersey phonebook"

I thanked him for the "Fluffhead" at New Haven the past December and he said "well thanks send drugs, send presents" and I hung up. I had this recorded on my answering machine but I cant seem to find the tape or haven't heard it in years but I will never forget this. 10 years later and 200+ shows this is still one fo the greatest stories i have to tell about my phish experience and this was just the beginning.
