PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
So it was Birmingham, Alabama, the year was 1994, and the month was May. I was going to school at (then) Livingston University (now University of WEST Alabama), and I heard through the Shvice that Phish was playing at 5 Points South Music Hall in Birmingham. I was from Connecticut and my girlfriend at the time was from Ohio (?). Anyway, imagine my utter joy of being able to see Phish in a club after such venues as Great Woods, the New Haven Coliseum, and the like.

I was bound and determined to get front and center, so we left in my VW bus early and embarked on the two hour drive to B'ham. We got there in time for a beer or three and then the doors opened. I made a b-line for the front (which must have looked odd as there just weren't that many people there yet). We sat down, front and center and waited for things to unfold. While watching folks I decided to take a stroll over to the Greenpeace booth and see what was up.

I stood and rapped with some guy about whales (sorry but sea mammals fascinate me) for a few minutes and then bid him, "have a good show." I turned around, and there he was in all his grand proboscis splendor.

"Hey Mike!" I said as I thrust my hand forth for a manly shake. "Man, I've listened to you for years and you guys make me happy." I continued.

"Hey man, that's great." He replied

"Well," I said, "Have a great show." He smiled and I walked back to my spot.

They opened with "Great Gig in the Sky" with Trey on drums and Fish on vocals and electrolux. When the tune was over Trey gave me one of his sticks. A great night. Never been that close to the nexus before or since. Close to the nexus... shit... I was in the nexus!

Thanks for this site. I really enjoy the many tales.
