PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
To set the stage: Hartford, 12/12/99, first show since the summer, and needless to say, I was psyched. We're walking around, just chillin and having a good time, and for some reason I decided to do ecstasy. Never tried it before, hadn't heard much about it, but at the time it seemed to be the right thing (ended up having a rager of a show, I had an almost religious epiphany during the pause in divided sky).

Anyway, we're hanging out, just about to go into the show, when my friend says, "Hey, there's Mike." At first I thought she meant our friend Mike who I had been looking for all evening. But no, it was THE Mike, so I felt obliged to introduce myself. I walk right up to him and go, "Hey, my name is Martin and I really dig your stuff. Can I shake your hand" Witty, right? Yeah, I thought so too. At first it seemed like he was reluctant, but after a second or two, he stuck out his hand and I, of course, shook it with gusto.

As fate would have it, the pills I had eaten thirty or forty minutes earlier chose that exact moment to kick in. I then look up at him, eyes half shut, completely reeling from the pill, and give him my best "I feel like my skin is running off of my body and your hand makes my brain tingle" look. He looked a little weirded out, so I released his hand, said thank you, and proceeded to float over to my friends. As I was walking away, I heard him say "Whoa" to whoever it was he was standing with. I definitely felt like somewhat of a fool.

Whatever. Great show, great people, great Antelope, great times. All in all, it was an interesting experience.
