PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
Yeah so i was waiting to meet fishman for 6 years after going to numerous shows and listening to nothing but phish all day everyday. Anyways, i see that Fishman will be playing w/ jazz mandolin at ziggys in winston - salem, NC. This club holds at max 250, so i figure, well this is my best chance.

I was front row for cypress and oswego, so i mean I know how to get in the front. It requires just a lot of patience. I wait outside ziggys for hours, and run in and get a front row spot, like dead front row.

Fish played w/ jazz mandolin and it was sooo sick seeing him up close like that. He was in a good mood, chatting with everyone. Anyways, after the show, he comes out and he's putting away his kit. Luckily I waited around because i needed a ride, so I saw him there. I break out this picture i took of a sunset (i'm a photographer) with all this writing on the back about how important phish was to me and how much i appreciate all the time he puts into his music. I wave it out to him among like 20 people asking for autographs, but he saw it wasn't the usual thing.

So, i say, "hey man, this isn't an autograph, check it out." he eyes the picture, checks out the back and smiles. It seemed he really liked it. He said it was cool, put it in his back pocket, thanked me, and went back to putting his stuff away.

Now, i know this isn't the biggest or funniest of stories, but it does show everyone that despite the hiatus, the boys can be met. I never thought i'd meet Fishman, but I guess i got a real great stroke of luck. The only insight i can give is that he is short! seriously, about 5'5 or so, much shorter than I am so it was weird talking down towards him when i'm so used to looking up at the stage. It really was one of the coolest moments ever
