PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
Well.... My second Phish concert was in 1991 at the State Street Theater in Ithaca New York. It was one of those great old movie theatres in New England where the band played a lot during this time. I had seen them once before but I did not "get it" yet, but I knew I liked them enough to see them again.

I am walking right by the State Street theatre a few hours before the show and I see a couple vans parked outside and the band and their very small crew pull up. Seeing Trey I decide to be cool and said something like "Hey I saw you at The Haunt in December and I am looking forward to seeing you guys again." He thanked me and then asked me a favor. He said, "Do you want to get in the show for free? If so can you help me move some stuff inside because we need some help."

So, for about an hour, me and a few other Ithaca folks moved some speakers and stuff inside and just followed the directions of Paul and the I think two other crew members. At one point there was Trey's guitar sitting on a stand, and I asked Paul if Trey would mind if I played it. He just said, "You mean just right now pick it up and play not plugged in right?" and I said, "Yeah just pick it up and play a couple chords."

He nodded yes, so I got to pick up Trey's guitar and play for about five minutes. I hung out with the band a bit and they thanked me for helping. As I got more and more into the band as years went by I never forgot that incident and the gravity of playing the same guitar where all those great moments of music came from.
