PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
I went to a boarding school in Concord, NH, and in early May of 1990 we heard that a band called "Phish" was coming to play. A few people had heard of them but most of us hadn't. Anyway, Lawn Boy had just been released and we got a copy of it. They were OK, but I was more interested to see what they sounded like live.

The night came and so did Phish. It was about 4 or 5 pm when they got there (they played in an old, english-style dining room). A few of us happened to run into them outside as they were carrying in their gear, and we offered to help. We were handed all kinds of crates/gear in boxes and helped carry it all in, after which (I think it was Trey) just thanked us and that was that.

Around 7 they started the show. Heyyyyy... these guys are pretty good. I really remember two things. I thought Page was an incredible keyboard player and Fishman was... well... Fish... trademark black w/red circle dress and white tubesocks, no shoes.

At setbreak the band was in the serving area eating cookies and drinking juice.. .laughing and all seemed to have a devilish shit-eating grin on.

School security made an announcement that if people kept smoking "something funny" outside that the band would be shut down.

Well, they completed the second set and after all was said sung and done, I was ENTIRELY conscious of the fact that I had just witnessed something special.
