PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
A bunch of us all made the trip to Noblesville, In. for the 3 nights at the Deer Creek Music Center in the summer of 2000. For those of you who were there, you should probably remember that Phil Lesh played the night before those three particular nights. We all had tickets for the Phil show and decided to take it easy and just go chill way up in the left corner of the lawn.

We knew that if we were way out of the way of anyone, we would not have to deal with the hustle and bustle of trying to get the best seat on the lawn. So up on the hill we were, drinking, smoking bowls, eating mushrooms, and just flat out relaxing high on the hill. When all of a sudden one of my buddies points out this goofy looking bastard with his hat way down low and a pair of shades on. The man comes up sits right down next to us and asks if we are enjoying the set.

Now, mind you, on his way up, we start to realize that he is heading right towards us, and because we were just commenting on how goofy this guy looked, we were like "oh great," this dude is gonna sit and talk to us, exactly what we didn't want. After looking at this dude for two seconds, i proceeded to say, "hey mike, can you do me a favor one of these next couple of nights, play mound." He laughed and rebutted, "I guess the hat doesn't work, huh?"

Just then the rest of my buddies realized that Mike Gordon was sitting right there with us, way up high on the hill, watching Phil Lesh play. He stuck around for about 10 Mins. until the rest of the entire left side of the lawn realized that Gordo was up there watching the Phil show with a couple of Kids. What a treat. Phil Lesh thumping away and us enjoying it with the company of Mike Gordon. 10 Minutes i'll never forget. Oh yeah, they never did play mound that weekend.
