PholkTales: Encounters With the Band
It's the Thursday night before the two- night stand at the Hampton Coliseum in November 1997. I am a junior attending the College of William and Mary, located in Williamsburg VA, and about a 20 minute drive to Hampton... thus Hampton is my "home" show.

Anyway, that night I receive a phone call from a friend (non-Phish-head) who tells me "dude, you're not going to believe this, but that band Phish is at the Green Leaf (a popular bar in Williamsburg)." I dismiss the call as a prank from my friend, him knowing of my excitement due to the upcoming concerts.

Five minutes later one of my frat brothers (another non Phish-head) calls me and says, "Yo that band you really like Phish, I think their they're at the Green Leafe." This time I believe him, since he does not know my friend who originally called me with the news. It is about 9:00 P.M. when my roommate and I go to the Leafe to spell out these rumors.

Once I enter the Leafe, sure enough there's Mike at the bar taking a shot, Trey sitting at a table surrounded by 8 girls, and Page talking to a group of people, having a beer. I'm flabbergasted, my roommate runs to call everyone we know, and I immediately sit down next to one of the girls sitting with Trey (a friend of mine, luckily).

Apparently, Trey has been ordering rounds of Jose Cuervo for everyone at the table, and I get included in the next round. Soon I am sitting next to Trey, asking him "which honey he wants to take home, since I am a pimp (Jose is in control!)." I end up meeting everyone in the Band (minus Fishman, who had a "rough" day according to Mike) and closing the bar down.

Trey amassed a $350 bar tab and them tipped the waitress another $150. Mike had been hanging out with this chic I knew, and she lived in this huge Victorian home with 10-15 residents called the "Hippie House". They frequently held late night and this night was no different, except the band members came along for the party.

We went back to the house where it was complete madness; by this point everyone in Williamsburg knew Phish was hanging out at the Hippie House. It turned into a real party; people selling drugs, the whole nine yards. When we got there the first thing we did was organize the puff session... I remember playing a Stevie Wonder CD with Boggie on... and Superstition, and Mike asked me to play Superstition again after the song was done.

I had to run home to meet some friends coming into town to see the shows.  Upon returning, only Mike was there still chilling out with that chic. Page and Trey had a van come pick them up with about 8 people and went back to their hotel in Williamsburg. They actually chilled out on the bus until sunrise and listened to the entire Denver show (reference the Phish Book; I'm not sure if that's where it came from, but that's what happened).

The Band did come back to the Hippie House after each show that year, and I remember Fish always had a bottle of Jose with him. Some of the members of the Hippie House became really good friends with the band and have been able to score tix to shows and backstage passes for the crew over time. Their is a picture of the band at the Green Leafe, and as we know those were some amazing shows!!!
