PholkTales: 8/14/02 - Phish Returns

I was definitely pumped for my first Phish concert (Spectrum, Phila), especially since they were finally touring again, but nothing can ever describe the magic I felt during the second one. We had pretty good seats for the first one, and the set list was great, but something was missing: the vibe from the crowd around us. It just wasn't as highly energized as it should've been and I definitely realized after seeing Phish at Nassau.

We arrived at the venue and roamed the parking lot. I love walking around there seeing everybody mingling with phellow phish phans, selling grilled cheese and beer and just having a good time. We scored some mushies to take back home and also popped some pills to enhance the experience (I don't roll too often, but Phish is my life and when im rolling, they become my universe; they take over me).

We then headed into the Colliseum and made our way to our seats; 20th row! (Thanks mom!) From the minute we got to our seats, I knew that we were in for a great time. The vibe was totally there. I talked to almost everyone around me and there was a huge feeling of excitement building in the room. Phish came on stage and everyone went CRAZY! They opened with Birds of A Feather, awesome song. They continued to play the most wonderful set ever; Horn, Bathtub, Sleep, Bouncin around the room and Destiny Abound (deff. rare) and more. We made friends with 5 people in front of us and we all felt incredibly connected. The feeling was there and so were we, and I couldn't have been happier to be exactly where I was at that moment.

During the break, we talked to even more people, who were just as pumped as we were. A guy walked past me about 3 times with this crazy hat, like 10 beaded necklaces, and tons of orange stickers that go on sandwiches saying "special". I kept telling him that he was soooooo special. The Second set started with Tweezer; wow! Then Soul Shakedown Party by bob marley. If only you could have been there, it was perfect. It WAS a soul shakedown party and EVERYONE was jam: sharin in the groove. They then continued with David Bowie, Round Room and Harry Hood. I witnessed my first glowstick war and I felt so enlightened by its beauty. We continued jamming thru the whole set with our many friends around us and kept cheering for more when Phish left the stage.

They encored with Contact which was great and then Mexican Cousin, which wasn't one of my favorites, and neither was it for the people around me. It didn't matter tho, we all felt that the show was so amazing, mexican cousin for an ending didnt even matter. But wait! That wasn't the end, they played Tweezer Reprise and the crowd went INSANE!!! Everyone was so excited! A perfect end to the best time of my life.

As we were gathering our stuff to leave, we said our good byes to all of the friends around us. Then, the special guy walked past me and once again I told him how special he was. He stopped and talked to us and took a picture w/ us. He got our address and told us that he would send us a copy. About a week later when we couldn't stop expressing our excitement from the concert, we got a letter in the mail from Chad, my special friend. He sent us an awesome pic and a plastic card that said "Vibe". He wrote a letter saying that we really kept the vibe up and that that's what its all about. He was definitely right. The vibe was there, and so were we. It was the most exhilarating experience ever! Always keep the vibe going!!!!!
